Democracy Day: Restructure Nigeria before 2023 general election, PDP chieftain tells Buhari

A chieftain of the People Democratic Party PDP in Anambra State, Honourable Ike Oligbo, has called on the President, President Mohammadu Buhari, to ensure Nigeria is restructured before the 2023 general election, to consolidate the effort of the late Chief MKO Abiola.

He emphasized that democracy will be strengthened the more if the country is restructured as been practice in some Democratic nations.

Oligbo, who made the called in his democracy day celebration message to Nigerians, which was made available to Tribune Online in Awka, on Friday, recall that Chief MKO Abiola died in the process of recovering his democratic mandate which has remained a sustainable tool for the country democracy.

The PDP Chieftain, who is also a gubernatorial aspirant in Anambra 2021 governorship election, insisted that the present political, economic structure the country is presently facing, coupled with the unworkable 1999 constitution is a big challenge to deepening of democracy in Nigeria.

He appealed to Nigerians, especially the Northerners to accept restructuring as a vehicle for deepening democracy and strengthening the country rather than seeing restructuring as a mere means of disintegrating the country.

While accusing President Buhari of promoting neo-feudalism and abandoning the Republican status of Nigeria, Oligbo, charges Nigeria electorates to vote out All Progressive Congress APC led government at all levels if it fails to heel to the agitations of Afenifere, Ohaneze and other ethnic groups on restructuring and for its failure to stabilize and advance democracy in the country, saying that democracy under the watch of President Buhari led government is not the type of democracy Chief Abiola sacrificed his life for.

He urged all-loving Nigerians to be a watchdog against anti-democracy activities and their agents in the country.

“As Nigeria celebrates yet another Democracy Day today, June 12, 2020. I thanked and congratulates all Nigerians both at home and in diaspora for their efforts in the enthronement of democratic rule in the country, Oligbo concluded.

Tribune Online has earlier reported that President Mohammadu Buhari, on June 6, 2018, passed a directive in changing the celebration of democracy day in the country from May 29 as used to be celebrated since 1999 to June 12 of every year.

The former was to honour Late Chief MKO Abiola, the generally acclaimed winner of June 12, 1993, Presidential election that was annulled by Gen Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida.
