Delta: Police recover guns, ammunition concealed in engine compartment

Operatives of the Delta State Police Command have recovered one AK-47 rifle with a defaced breach number, two pump-action guns, one magazine, and eight rounds of live AR ammunition concealed under the compartment of a vehicle while chasing suspected kidnappers in Asaba.

Also recovered were twenty-one rounds of live cartridges and an operational vehicle.

Officers of the Special Anti-Kidnapping and Cyber Crime Squad courageously chased after the suspected kidnappers to Ezenei, along the Asaba/Benin Expressway in the state capital, forcing them to jump out of their vehicles, hurriedly take to their heels, and flee into the nearby bush with bullet injuries, abandoning the cars.

According to a statement by the command’s spokesman, SP Bright Edafe, on Saturday, “On 27/11/2024, at about 2145hrs, acting on a distress call from the command’s control room regarding a kidnap incident along DLA Road in Asaba, where four armed hoodlums operating in a Toyota Camry 2.4 Model, Reg. No. Enugu BLF 490 AA, kidnapped one male and one female victim (names withheld), and also took a Toyota Camry vehicle belonging to a woman.

“The Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, upon receiving this information, directed the command’s Special Anti-Kidnapping and Cyber Crime Squad to ensure the hoodlums are arrested and the victims rescued.”

“The commander, CSP Labe Joseph, led operatives from the unit and embarked on an intelligence-led operation, trailing the suspected kidnappers to Ezenei along the Asaba/Benin Expressway. The hoodlums, upon sighting the police team closing in on them, zoomed off and diverted to Oko Market Road in an attempt to escape.

“But the team courageously chased after the hoodlums, forcing them to jump out of their vehicles, hurriedly take to their heels, and flee into the nearby bush with bullet injuries, abandoning the cars.

“The arms and ammunition were recovered during a search of the vehicles.”

Edafe reiterated the police commissioner’s assurances to residents that the command would do everything possible to ensure the fleeing suspects are arrested and brought to justice.
