The Delta State Technical Working Committee (STWC) on gender-based violence has been inaugurated with a charge to its members to adequately publicize their programs to sensitize their target audience.
The 20-member committee’s terms of reference include coordinating the activities of the gender-based violence team in the state, ensuring a broad-based response to the escalating gender-based violence incidents, initiating actions to eliminate all forms of sexual-based violence, and transmitting the same information into the national-based dashboard.
The inauguration ceremony took place in Asaba, and the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr Kingsley Emu, emphasised the importance of well-defined messaging being directed to the target audience where such issues were prevalent.
He cautioned committee members against bias in their approach to matters brought before them, highlighting that sexual assault affected both men and women.
Dr Emu encouraged the members to approach their duties with commitment and passion, considering it an opportunity to give back to society.
The Chairman of the Committee, Mrs Oghenekevwe Agas, who is also the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Women Affairs, Community, and Social Development, stated that the committee’s establishment resulted from a directive of the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs to collate and address issues of sexual and gender-based violence in Nigeria.
She emphasised the importance of addressing sexual and gender-based violence, noting that it affected men, women, and children.
Mrs Agas also used the opportunity to request continued government attention and funding for sexual and gender-based violence issues.
The committee comprises professionals from various ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs), security agencies, implementing partners, religious associations, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that handle gender-based violence issues.
