The agony which motorists plying the Agbor-Abraka federal road in Delta State go through will soon abate as the state government commenced the fixing of the collapsed Umutu bridge and the bad portion of the approaching road in Ukwuani council area axis of the road.
The State Commissioner for Works in charge of Urban & Highways, Mr Noel Omodon, who inspected the level of work on the project, stated that though the road was a federal highway under contract, the state government decided to intervene in order to protect the lives of motorists who ply the route.
According to him, the state government was mindful of the untold hardship the collapsed approach road to Umutu Bridge has caused motorists and has to embark on the palliative to cushion the effect.
He explained that, so far, the contractor had excavated the failed materials, filled it with concrete boulders and sharp sand which would take a few days to solidify.
Mr Omodon added that a new approach slab that was not on the design of the road would be constructed to address the problem on the road.
Meanwhile, the construction of the approach road and bridge across the Ase river to Beneku will be completed in April 2022. The bridge links Kwale in Ndokwa West and communities in Ndokwa East local government.
Speaking while on inspection of the projects, Mr Omodon stressed that the project was of uttermost importance especially to the riverine communities adding that government is desirous of completing it in record time.
He enjoined the contracting firm handling the project to maintain specifications and speed.
The Site Engineer of the construction company handling the projects, Engr Ladan Mamuda, assured that the projects would be completed by mid next year.
Engr Mamuda explained that the sub-structure was 100 per cent completed while the superstructure is ongoing.
He, however, appealed to the commissioner to facilitate the release of adequate funds to enable the firm to meet the deadline.
Also speaking, a motorcycle operator, Mr Ade Esigo, who ply the road, thanked Governor Ifeanyi Okowa for constructing the road and bridge, stressing that the project would boost socio-economic activities and aesthetics outlook of the area.
