DELSU lecturers to join nationwide strike

Lecturers at Delta State University, Abraka (DELSU) have resolved to join the impending nationwide strike action by university teachers to kick against the non-implementation of several agreements by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, (ASUU) with the federal government.

In a statement after a special mobilisation congress on Tuesday, February 8 by the chairperson and secretary, Prof. Godwin Demaki and Dr Paul Opone, respectively and made available to journalists in Benin City, they slammed the government for lacking the political will to reposition the education sector in the country through improved funding.

Demaki and Opone tasked the government on the need to stop further revenue leakages to enable the funding of the Nigerian public university system.

They insisted that there should be enough of the government’s disdain for collective agreements in form of a Memorandum of Action (MoA) and a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that ought to uplift the fortunes of education in the country.

The unionists berated the failure of the government to honour agreements reached with university teachers and vowed to actively participate in the impending strike action to compel the government to meet the demands of the union.

They said that the government will hold the government responsible for the strike due to its failure to sign and implement the renegotiated 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement.

The chairman and the scribe expressed grave concern that while the government was mindlessly underfunding the universities, the government at the state and federal levels were busy establishing new universities without the genuine commitment to funding.

Demaki and Opone called on the state and federal governments to desist from the proliferation of the public universities system in the country.
