Deficient leadership system responsible for Nigeria’s high corruption — Stakeholders

Published by

Stakeholders in the just concluded 2023 under 45 CEOs business and leadership summit in Onitsha, Anambra State, have blamed the high rate of corruption in the country on a lack of an active leadership system.

They lamented that the situation, coupled with the pains that emanate from the removal of fuel subsidies, has brought uncontrollable unemployment, insecurity, and youth restiveness across the country.

The stakeholders called on the President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to focus more on industrialization policy to help address the issues and other challenges facing the country at the moment.

The summit with the theme Creating a Sustainable Africa Through Active Leadership was organised by the Ultimate Destiny Uplifters Foundation (UDUF) Africa, a non-governmental organisation established to promote good governance in Nigeria and the African continent at large.

Speaking further at the event held at Federal Housing Estate Onitsha over the weekend, the former Transcorp boss, Mr Valentine Ozigbo, proposed a reform of the leadership structure in the country where the federal, state, and local governments would have policing structures.

Ozigbo, who was the keynote speaker of the summit, also highlighted the need for governments at all levels and institutions to be able to provide strong leadership and coordination capabilities and engage collaboratively with all relevant stakeholders to mutually reinforce values.

According to him, today we gather in a world marked by volatility and uncertainty, a challenge that tests the mettle of every leader. In such an environment, the traditional models of business and leadership are no longer sufficient. We must adapt, innovate, and, most importantly, anticipate.

“The key to navigating uncertainty lies in effective scenario planning and portfolio diversification. This approach involves envisioning various potential futures and preparing strategies to address them. Diversification, not just in terms of financial investments but also in business models and markets, reduces risk and ensures resilience.

Building corporate governance is essential for building trust and credibility among stakeholders. It ensures transparency, ethical practices, and accountability.

As leaders, our strength lies not just in our technical skills but in our emotional intelligence.

In conclusion, building to last in today’s uncertain environment demands a multifaceted approach. It’s about preparing for various scenarios, diversifying portfolios, strengthening internal processes, and being accountable.

It requires emotionally intelligent leadership and a commitment to continuous improvement. And most importantly, it involves actively influencing our business environment. Let’s embrace these strategies as we forge a path to enduring success in Nigeria and Africa as a whole.

Ozigbo, however, charged the organisers and other participants, mostly the youths, to be passionate about their endeavours if they must succeed in life, noting that for one to succeed in this temporary world, he or she must be emotionally intelligent.

He stated the importance of dialogue in furthering peace, unity, and national cohesion, as, according to him, it affords everybody the opportunity to project their views and cross-fertilise ideas.

Ozigbo, who was the former candidate of the People Democratic Party (PDP) in the Anambra 2021 governorship election, also informed the gathering that he was able to achieve in life because of proper planning and judicious use of the few available resources he gathered during his one-year NYSC mandatory service in Warri, Delta State.

Others who also spoke during the summit, Pastor Sam Obiorah of Life of Faith Gospel Assembly and the Managing Director/Chief Executive Director of Ike God Foods Industries Limited, makers of Jolly Jolly Noodles, Dr. Ikenna Ifejiofor, also admonished Nigerian youths to focus more on skills acquisition programmes to be self-sufficient, lamenting that there are no more white-collar jobs in public offices in Nigeria.

Earlier, in his address, the founding president of Ultimate Destiny Uplifters Foundation (UDUF) Africa, Mr Smart Chinedu Ezuma, said the summit is one of the ways the Foundation stand to contribute to balancing the disparity in the leadership situation in Africa

According to him, everything rises and falls under leadership. If we can make corrections to our leadership mindset now that we are young, I believe that the future of Africa will be great.

He noted that any person under the age of 45 is highly favoured, lucky, and blessed, whether male or female because he or she is in peak performance season, which I call the afternoon session of life.

It is a good time to create and re-create your life. It’s not a time to follow shadows, build your life in the air, or have empty dreams. It’s a time to be intentional and catch up with destiny.

*From the age of 18 to 45, if you haven’t gotten clear on your purpose and destiny and made the necessary contribution towards achieving your purpose or reaching your destiny, it suffices to say you pass as a fool.

While confirming to be true the saying that a fool at 40 is a fool forever, Mr Ezuma urged Nigerian youths to be innovative and intentional about their future.
