A group of Igbo Leaders under the umbrella of Igbo Improvement Union (Oganiru Ndi-Igbo) met in Enugu on December 4, 2016 to discuss major issues affecting them. The venue of the meeting was Nike-Lake Hotel, Enugu. The Hall at the five star hotel was filled to its capacity as people came from far and near to attend the meeting.
Among the top dignitaries were Professor Barth Nnaji, a renowned Professor of Robotics and former Minister for Power in then President Jonathan Administration, Chief Ugochukwu Agballa, Rt. Emmanuel Nwobo, Chief Andy Okoye, Dr Amanze Obi, Chief Enyinanya Imo.
One of the striking issues observed in the gathering was that it gave apple opportunities to the audience to speak out their minds especially as it affects the people of the Southeast Nigeria.
The vex issue that was extensively deliberated was the devastation of Igbo landscape by erosion as well as the menace of Fulani herdsmen.
Another major area discussed by the audience was the alleged killing of pro-Biafra elements prompting the summit to call on the Federal Government to set up a Commission of Inquiry to investigate the report of the Amnesty International on the alleged extra-judicial killing of 150 Igbo youths by Nigerian Security forces.
The Igbo group which described the killing of the youths as dastardly evil and most inhuman act, urged the Commission to fish out the perpetrators and prosecuted accordingly.
They also decried the ecological devastation landscape of Southeast geo-political zone, saying the erosion menace is being compounded by over grazing by Fulani herdsmen.
In the communiqué signed by the National President of the Igbo Improvement Union, Chief Ugochukwu Agballa and four others, said they had resolved to plant five million cashew seedlings beginning from 2017 in partnership with communities ravaged by erosion so as to checkmate the erosion and economically position Igbo land as the largest producer of cashew nuts in the world.
“Igbo Improvement Union (Oganiru Ndigbo) resolved to host an international pictorial exhibition on erosion devastation in Igbo land in order to draw local and international attention to this menace currently raving the ecology of the Southeastern States”, the group stated.
