Cybercrime challenges present opportunities for job creation – Prof Longe

Published by

Vice Chancellor of Midlands Open University, Professor Olumide Longe, has said that the issues of cybercrime present opportunities for Nigerian youths to create employment to address such problems.

Professor Longe spoke at the weekend during a Cybersecurity Awareness Webinar organised by the Ibadan Digital Academy.

The don, who said cyberspace would continue to grow, alongside cybercrime, charged Nigerian youths with the need to look towards solving the problems being faced by people on the internet.

He said Nigerians cannot access some opportunities online because once the organisers see the person’s internet identity as emanating from Nigeria, such person would be blocked instantly, adding that this problem presents Nigerian youths the opportunity to think critically into how such challenges could be solved.

“Nigerian youths should come together to provide platforms that will assure foreign sites that a person using a site had been screened and is genuine and would not scam other users. With this, we are turning our challenges into opportunities which can bring about the establishment of billion dollar companies,” Professor Longe said.

A cybersecurity professional in Australia, Mr Oluranti Adeniyi, also admitted that cybercrime will continue to rise across the globe, and then comes the need for cybersecurity experts to always thwart the activities of criminals, while a certified ethical hacker and cybersecurity professional, Dr John Efiong, shared how people could protect their privacy in the digital space.

The Ibadan Digital Academy was established to promote cybersecurity awareness and encourage careers in digital security and participants attended from across the globe.
