Industry leaders and stakeholders in the blockchain industry unilaterally agreed that blockchain and the metaverse have the potential to shape the future of the digital economy in Nigeria at the 4th National Cyberchain Conference and National Tour 2022 held on October 22, 2022, in Abuja. Themed “Embracing the Metaverse Economy,” the event gathered over 1,200 tech leaders, policymakers, innovators, and enthusiasts to explore the future of cryptocurrency and blockchain in Nigeria.
Professor Umar Garba Danbatta, CEO of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), in his keynote address, underscored the transformative potential of the metaverse economy. He highlighted how emerging technologies are critical to Nigeria’s digital transformation, stating: “Blockchain integration with the metaverse presents unparalleled opportunities for job creation, economic growth, and transparent governance.”

The conference had an array of industry leaders sharing insights on the theme including Adedeji Awonibi, Senior Partner at A & D Forensics, who delivered an enlightening session on fraud mitigation strategies in digital finance, offering attendees practical solutions for safeguarding blockchain systems. William Phelps, Investment Manager at Adaverse, also narrated an extensive session about funding for African blockchain startups while also encouraging entrepreneurs to tap into investment and mentorship programs.
Jude Ozinegbe, Convener of Cyberchain, speaking on the ultimates of the event stated that the conference was aimed at educating participants about opportunities in blockchain, decentralized finance and cybersecurity. Ozinegbe added: “Cyberchain is not just an event; it is a movement that aims to inspire innovation, knowledge sharing and create networks that will elevate Nigeria’s tech ecosystem.
The conference hosted Cyberthon, a hackathon in which participants created cutting-edge blockchain and cyber security solutions. TeamAlphaChain took first place with their blockchain-based secure identity verification system.
Conference-goers praised the quality of the conversations to which they were privy and the genuine networking opportunities they were afforded. Attendee and cybersecurity professional Chinedu Okafor joked: “The quality of speakers and the level of topics were truly inspiring.”
