Cyber criminals expose our green passport to shame – EFCC boss

Ola Olukoyede, the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), recently shared a personal experience that highlights the discrimination Nigerians face abroad due to the actions of internet fraudsters.

He noted that while speaking with journalists on Monday.

During a recent trip to South Bay, Asia, Olukoyede encountered a troubling incident while trying to pay for his accommodations.

He recounted, “I gave them my card, they deducted the money, and then the lady stood up and went to another office to make a photocopy of my card. I asked her why she was making a photocopy of my card, as this exposed me to fraud. She replied that it was because it was a Nigerian card and they had standing instructions to suspect Nigerian cards.”

This incident, which Olukoyede described as deeply embarrassing, highlights the stigma and embarrassment Nigerians face internationally, driven by the notoriety of internet fraudsters.

Such discriminatory practices are not only unjust but also perpetuate harmful stereotypes about Nigerian citizens.
