CVR: Osun maintains lead in online registration

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), on Wednesday, provided an update on the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise which commenced last June.

A statement signed by Festus Okoye, National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee gave 1,377,733 as the number of fresh online pre-registrants so far while 120,600 citizens have completed their physical registration since the exercise commenced.

The statistics revealed that Osun State where the governorship election is slated for July 16 2022 by the electoral umpire maintained its lead on the online registration chart. About 297,301 prospective voters have registered online. The South-West state is trailed by Edo State where 138,612 fresh voters registered online ahead of the forthcoming general elections as there is no pending off-season election in the South-south state.

Third, on the chart is Anambra State with 84,976 fresh voters. Tribune Online checks revealed that the governorship election is expected to hold in the South-East state on November 6 this year.

Ekiti State where a governorship election had been fixed for June 18, 2022, however, has only 25,074 fresh voters registered online.

Further investigation revealed that chieftains of certain political parties recently raised the alarm over the number of online registrants from Osun state in the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration.

Operating under the aegis of Forum of Progressive Political Parties, certain chieftains of the Young Progressives Party, African Democratic Congress and Labour Party, expressed strong reservations over the surge in online registrants from the state.

The trio of Remi Ayanlade, Bello Adebayo and Dr Idowu Omidiji of the YPP, LP and ADC, respectively described the figure as miraculous, outrageous and suspicious.

Omidiji alleged that the Forum has evidence that “some INEC staff must have compromised the Commission’s electronic server and filled an inexistent and unrealistic number from the back end of the server.”

Okoye in his statement on Wednesday further disclosed that the Commission has uploaded on its website and social media platforms, the detailed distribution of the registrants by age, State/FCT, occupation, gender, type of registration and disability.

“Young Nigerians between the ages of 18 and 34 are still leading in both online registration (1,074,260 or 65 per cent) and completed registration (84,619 or 70 per cent). In terms of occupation, students are leading in both pre-registration (529,219 or 32 per cent) and completed registration (48,897 or 41 per cent). For gender distribution, 940,062 (or 57 per cent) are male and 717,504 (or 43 per cent) are female for online pre-registration while the figures for completed registration are 72,075 (or 60%) male and 48,525 (or 40 per cent) female.

“Once again, the Commission appeals to all Nigerians to seize the opportunity to either initiate their registration online and schedule an appointment at their convenience to complete the process or visit any of the Commission’s State/LGA office nationwide to register.”
