Customs intercept N2.5m fake currency notes, 40 drums of ethanol

The anti-smuggling team of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Ogun Command, on Tuesday, intercepted N2.5 million fake currency, at Ihunbo checking point, along Sango-Idiroko road.

In a statement by the NCS Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Maiwada, the team arrested one Samson Odejiba, who was in possession of the fake money.

The suspect upon interrogation confessed to the crime, saying that he was commissioned by one Alfa to take the money to Owode Yewa, with a promised reward of N5,000.

Maiwada said, “In continuation with the fight against smuggling by Officers and Men of Ogun NCS Command under the leadership of Comptroller Agbara Michael, the Command anti-smuggling Team intercepted fake currency notes worth N2.5 million at Ihunbo checking point along Sango-Idiroko road.

“While being interrogated, the suspect one Samson Odebija disclosed that he was commissioned by one Alfa to help him transport the fake currency notes to Owode from Idiroko with a promise to reward him with N5,000, but met his waterloo.”

He also added that the Command anti-smuggling crack team intercepted 40 drums of ethanol strictly stamped by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), for industrial purpose.

The PRO said some unscrupulous elements were in the habit of distributing the product to unsuspecting members of the public, especially in Idiroko axis of the state, who ignorantly dilute it with water and consumed thereafter.

Maiwada said the consumption of the product taken as alcoholic drink is harmful to the health of those consuming it.

Similarly, the Command Anti-Bunkering Team ‘A’ was reported to have discovered a smuggling hideout at Iko-gate along Idiroko road, leading to seizure 160 jerry cans (25 litres each) of Premium Motor Spirit popularly known as petrol.
