Culture a vital tool for forging unity among all nations- LASG

LAGOS State government has said that culture remains a vital tool for forging unity among all nations of the world, even as it noted that Africans had always stood out because of the unique way they handle their lives and cultural values.

Director for Primary School, Lagos State, Mrs. Teegee Fowora, said this while delivering her welcome address at the 2017 Cultural Day Celebration of ST & T Regency International School at Fani Kayode Street, Ikeja GRA.

The event with the theme, ‘Culture: A tool for global Unity,’ saw pupils, parents, teachers and visitors gathered to experience and enjoy the exciting display of cultural activities from within and outside Nigeria, including Israel, Germany, Mexico and Brazil, among others.

Fowora, who described Nigerian cultures as not only rich but also distinct, said the ST & T Regency International School event was mainly about blending Nigerian culture with other cultures beyond the country’s borders and African continent.

“It must be well understood that by choosing these cultures, it doesn’t mean we disrespect other people’s culture. There must be unity in diversity. While we showcase these foreign cultures, we must maintain our Africa identity and Nigeria identity in particular,” she said.

The school founder, Mrs Maggie Ibru, in her remark, said cultural day celebrationwas meant to introduce students to different cultures in Nigeria and other lands and get them exposed to them.

“As you can see, they even danced the German dance, they learned about the culture and the peculiarities of the people.

“The same thing goes for the Kanuri, Urhobos and the Tivs. So they can

confidently tell you about these people and their cultures, and if for any reason they’re posted there for Youth Corps Service (NYSC), they wouldn’t be alien, neither would they find it strange,” Ibru said.
