The Cross River State Government has dismissed assertions that it has not implemented the N70,000 minimum wage, labeling a recent media report as “false, unfounded, and a serious misrepresentation of facts.”
In a statement released on Monday, the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Nsa Gill, expressed disappointment that such misleading information appeared in a respected national newspaper (not Nigerian Tribune) without adequate fact-checking.
“We have been made aware of an inaccurate report in media outlets (not Nigerian Tribune) , incorrectly including Cross River as a state that hasn’t adopted the new N70,000 minimum wage for workers,” Gill stated. “This claim is completely untrue.”

He highlighted that Governor Bassey Edet Otu’s administration was among the first in the nation to fully implement the new wage structure as early as December 2024, applying it to both state and local government employees with comprehensive adjustments, ensuring workers are already reaping the benefits of the new wage.
Gill further noted that such misleading claims are sensitive issues and it would be appropriate for the media outlets to also publish the verified stance of the Cross River State government.
The state’s assertions can easily be confirmed by stakeholders like the State Chairmen of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE).
“Governor Bassey Otu’s administration is fully dedicated to the welfare and empowerment of workers in Cross River State,” he stated. “Salaries are consistently paid on time and without interruption,” he added.
He urged the public to disregard the inaccurate report, assuring residents of Cross River and Nigerians that the state government is committed to focusing on the well-being of its workforce and the community as a whole.
