The police force in Cross River State has announced the dismissal of Inspector Effiong Bassey, who suffers from a mental condition, following his recent act of indiscriminately firing weapon which resulted in one death and two injuries.
During a press briefing, the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Irene Ugbo confirmed that Bassey has been dismissed, charged in court, and is currently in custody at Afokang Correctional Centre.
Ugbo urged journalists to fact-check their reports before publication, clarifying that the police did not neglect the victims as reported.
“We visited the family of the deceased on the day of the incident and checked on the injured individuals at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, where they underwent successful surgeries,” she stated.
She added that one of the injured victims is recovering and the police are committed to ensuring that all affected parties receive adequate support.
“The police provided financial assistance from the outset of the incident and every party involved has been kept informed,” Ugbo assured, emphasising that there was never a lack of care for the victims, including the family of the deceased.
“The surgery for the victim shot in the neck was successful and we will continue to give update on his recovery,” the PPRO stated.
