Crisis brews in Oyo PDP, as aspirants reject consensus candidates

Published by

Crisis is brewing in the Oyo State Chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), following the adoption of consensus policy by the leadership of the party.

Aggrieved aspirants had in a letter to the leader of the party and the Governor of Oyo State, Engineer Seyi Makinde called for a free and fair primaries as against consensus policy.

They argued that adoption of consensus policy is nothing but an indirect way of imposing candidates against the will of the people.

The forum of PDP aspirants in Oyo Central Senatorial District in a letter signed by Comrade Wale Ajani and Hon. Wale Adegoke rejected the adoption of the immediate past Chief of Staff to Gov. Makinde, Chief Bisi Ilaka as a consensus candidate for the senatorial district.

They argued that Ilaka represents the interest of the party, not the stakeholders.

The letter read: “We, the undersigned who are aspirants in the forthcoming senatorial election, appreciate your various developmental programmes for Oyo State and also proud of your leadership strides.

“We state categorically that the purported
endorsement of Chief Bisi llaka by some party stakeholders on 3rd April, 2022 did not go well with us. This is because the whole process was pre-determined and under serious security threats.

“As a democrat, sir; we believe you are aware that the basic principle of consensus is for all participating aspirants to agree with signatories. This we believe the stakeholders did not do.

“We therefore appeal that you allow democratic procedures take place on the basis of free and fair primaries. We count on your support, sir. Please accept our highest regards.”
