Creation of 19 LCDAs in Ekiti, a misplaced priority ― South-West PDP

The South-West chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described as a clear case of a misplaced priority the recent creation of 19 local council development areas by the administration of Dr Kayode Fayemi in Ekiti State.

The zonal PDP, who said that the Fayemi-led All Progressives Congress administration had stagnated the state since October 2018 that it got to the office, called on PDP members in Ekiti to unite ahead of the 2022 governorship election to ensure its victory.

The zonal publicity secretary of the PDP, Chief Sanya Atofarati in a statement in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, on Sunday, disclosed that it would be extremely difficult for the government to meet the financial obligations of the new LCDAs in view of what the party described as underfunding and struggling existing 16 council areas in the state.

The statement read, “The creation of LCDAs is a misplaced priority. Does Ekiti State have the financial capacity to finance additional 19 LCDAs when the 16 legal councils are underfunded and struggling to survive? We see it as an avenue to steal state resources and another opportunity to further impoverish the people to finance the new councils.

“Unfortunately, Ekiti State has remained where it was in 2018 when Fayemi took over from PDP led government. There have been no physical projects inaugurated or under construction rather than his re-commissioning of the already commissioned projects such as the State High Court Complex, the ultra-modern Oja-Oba Market and others. The state is totally run aground.

“Those who promoted the evil APC in the 2018 election are now gnashing their teeth in pain as they are now at the mercy of the dictatorial Governor Fayemi who has disintegrated the party with his tyrannical attitude towards his party members.

“The people of the state and especially PDP members must come together to ensure the state is rescued from the maladministration of the ruling APC which is a thorn in the flesh of the economical growth of the state.”

But APC Zonal Publicity Secretary, Karounwi Oladapo, who dismissed the PDP submission on the creation of the LCDAs, said that Governor Fayemi had laid the foundation for APC’s victory in the 2022 election with visible landmark and legacy projects and programmes across all parts of the state and as well attraction of funds for the development of the state.

Oladapo noted that the PDP believed the LCDAs were not possible because “they lacked ideas. All that is needed is to be resourceful, go out and bring out money as Fayemi has been doing.

“If Fayemi can be doing all these infrastructures development outside the money from Federation Accounts using international connections, Public-Private Partnership, development partners, how on earth will anyone doubt how he will finance LCDAs. It is a question of leadership. It is a question of not siphoning local government money.

“When PDP was here, for their four years, nothing was done on agriculture, nothing was done on the industry, nothing was done on unemployment, the only road created was a misplaced priority of an overhead bridge where there was no river nor traffic congestion,” the APC spokesman said.
