THE Consumer Protection Council has advocated for more robust participation of well-meaning persons in the education of Nigerians, especially women and youth on their rights as consumers.
Director General of CPC, Dupe Atoki, who made the call in Abuja said this was the only way to ensure that citizens had value for products and services they paid for.
She particularly sought the participation of the Wife of the President, Aisha Buhari, in the education of women and youth on the right of consumer.
Speaking at the World Consumer Right Day celebration in Abuja recently, the DG said the need for more sensitisation on protection of rights of consumers informed the Council’s decision to choose the wife of the President as Consumer Ambassador of Nigeria.
She said the Council was doing everything possible within its legal framework to ensure that Nigerians in the rural areas were aware of their rights to have value for what they use their money to purchase.
Atoki noted that the office of the wife of the President was strategic enough to pull millions of women from the rural areas for sensitisation on consumer rights issues.
“If we are able to sensitise a lot of women especially in the rural areas, it will go a long way in educating the general public on their purchasing rights and how to seek redress when not satisfied.
“Any product you have paid for and you are not satisfy with the quality, it is your right to ensure that you seek redress from through CPC. That is what we want people from the rural areas to know,” Atoki stated.
The Wife of the President, who was represented at the event by the wife of Nasarawa State Governor, Mairo Umar Almakura, promised to use the existing structures on ground to educate women and youths in the country on their consumer’s right.
