CP sets up investigation team to probe Imo explosion

The Imo State Police Commissioner of Police, CP Aboki Danjuma has set up a high-power investigative team to unravel the circumstances surrounding the suspected bomb explosion in Umuneke Obazu Mbieri in Mbaitoli Local Government Area of the State.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer SP Henry Okafor told Nigerian Tribune in Owerri on Monday that the investigative team to be led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Criminal Investigative Department CID will holistically look into the matter to ascertain the true course of explosion.

Okoye said that already a Deputy Commissioner of Police from the Command and the DPO.in charge of Mbaitoli Supol Wet Ben have visited the scene of the incident while the Deputy Commissioner of Operations has carried out clearance operations of the site and has certified the place free and safe.

The CP appealed to the people of the state to go about their normal businesses.

The incident occured on Sunday morning at about 1:00 am, when a suspected drone was seen hovering over Umuneke in Obazu Mbieri and neighboring Umunjam and Amaulu in Ihitte Mbieri Autonomous Communities which was a very unusual occurrence.

About ten minutes from the time the suspected drone was sighted, a terribly loud explosion was heard bringing one building down and causing varying degrees of harm to several buildings.

Nigerian Tribune learned that the effect of the explosion was felt more than 2km from its epicenter.

The Chairman of Mbaitoli Local Government Area, Hon. Ifunanya Nwanegwo, and the Secretary General of Obazu Autonomous Community, Hon. Emeka Nosiri were among the first people to arrive at the site of the explosion as they encouraged everybody to remain calm as everything was being done to unravel the cause of the explosion.
