Jigawa State governor, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has appealed to rice processing companies to reduce the prices of the commodity for local consumers within the state to cushion the economic effect of the COVID-19 pandemic.
This was contained in a press statement issued signed and made available to Tribune Online in Dutse, the state capital by the senior special assistant to the governor on new media, Mr Auwalu Danladi Sankara. Sankara said the “governor made the appeal over the weekend when he visited some of the largest rice processing factories in the state.”
According to the statement, “the governor observed that the people in the state deserve to enjoy cheaper prices than others because the state is one of the largest producers of rice in the country.”
“Jigawa State is one of the largest producers of rice in the country, and now we have many factories in the state processing rice with high-quality output. Today, if you go to many southern states you must definitely see rice from Jigawa State in their markets. This is something we must all be proud of.
“Every Nigerian has a role to play to ease the hardship on the masses especially after many citizens suffered from the devastating effect of the coronavirus pandemic. And for the rice processing companies, reducing their cost price is one of the roles to play that directly benefits the masses faster and equally.”
Abubakar also warned marketers not to sabotage the reduction of the price adding that they should not take advantage by going after fat profits or diverting the rice to other states.
He continued “I’m appealing to the producers on behalf of the consumers in Jigawa state that the price of the parboiled rice to be reduced. As you are all aware the pandemic has hurt the livelihood of our people and by reducing the price of the most popular staple you would have played a significant role in reducing hardship on the people.”
