Court sentences septugenarian to 3 months in prison for breach of trust

A Sharia court sitting at Magajin Gari in Kaduna State on Thursday sentenced a 70-year-old woman, Habiba Musa, to three months in prison for breach of trust.

The judge, Malam Musa Sa’ad, convicted Musa following her guilty plea to the charge of cheating her friend, Asabe Muhammad, of N300,000 that was kept in her care.

He, however, gave the convict an option of N10,000 fine.

Sa’ad also ordered that Musa should refund N151,000 to Muhammad, being the balance of the amount still in her possession.

Earlier in the proceeding, Muhammad had told the court that she entrusted N300,000 with Musa in 2016 for safekeeping with the intention of using it later to buy a land.

Asabe Muhammad said “I gave Habiba N300,000 to keep for me and asked her not to give any of my children because I was planning to buy a land.

“Unfortunately, when I needed the money, she gave me only N10,000, saying that was all she had.

I had to involve her children before they paid me N149,000.”

Muhammad prayed the court to assist her in retrieving the balance of N151,000 from Musa.

Musa, who pleaded guilty to the charge, begged the court for mercy, attributing her misdeeds to the devil.
