Court remands Police prosecutor in prison for allegedly aiding escape in Osun

A Magistrate Court, sitting in Osogbo, Osun State capital, on Wednesday ordered that a Police prosecutor, identified as Sergeant Ajayi Sunday be remanded in Ilesa prison custody for allegedly aiding the escape of two accused persons, standing trial.

The two suspects, who allegedly escaped with the aid of Ajayi were said to be standing trial in a case of assault to wit occasional harm, malicious damage and stealing.

The defendant (Police Prosecutor), who is 38 years old was arraigned before Magistrate O. A. Ajanaku bothering on a 2-count charge, bothering on negligence and permitting the escape of two accused persons from lawful custody.

According to Police Prosecutor, Inspector Elisha Olusegun, Ajayi and others currently at large conspired to commit an offence to wit negligently permitting the escape of two suspects, namely Kazeem Oladeinde and Idowu Hazzan Adedapo on November 1, 2017, at about 5.00 pm in Osogbo.

He submitted that the offences were contrary to and punishable under Sections 517 and 137and punishable under Section 138 of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Volume 11, Laws of Osun State, 2003.

However, Sunday Ajayi pleaded not guilty to the two count charges, preferred against him and was remanded in prison custody following his failure to meet the bail conditions.

Presiding Magistrate had granted him bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in the like sum, stressing that one of the sureties must be a federal civil servant on grade level 14 and the second surety must present a Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) of landed property.

She added that both sureties must swear to the affidavit of means and provide evidence of tax clearance with three passports photographs each, just as the case was adjourned to May 23, 2018, for mentioning.
