Court remands 2 for stealing cell phone, N50,000 cash

TWO unemployed men, Umaru Sedik and Mohammed Mayo who pleaded guilty to stealing a cell phone and N50,000 cash, were on Tuesday remanded in Kirikiri Prisons by an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos

The Magistrate, Mrs A.K. Dosunmu, who gave the order, said the defendants should remain behind bars, pending when they would be sentenced at the next date of adjournment.

Sedik, 18 and Mayo, 20, whose residential addresses were unknown, had pleaded guilty to a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Josephine Ikhayere had told the court that the defendants committed the offences on Feb. 26, at Oko-Oba, Agege, Lagos.

Ikhayere said that the defendants snatched a bag containing a cell phone valued at N80,000 and cash of N50,000 totaling N130,000, belonging to the complainant, Mr Chibuzor Samuel.

“The defendants accosted the complainant, demanded his bag and threatened to harm him if he refused to comply.

“They forcefully collected the bag from him and took to their heels.

“The complainant raised alarm and people ran after them and they were apprehended and taken to the police station.

“The stolen items were recovered from them,” the prosecutor said.

Ikhayere said the offences contravened Sections 287 and 411 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 prescribes three years imprisonment for stealing while Section 411 attracts two years for conspiracy.
The magistrate fixed March 21 for facts and sentencing.
