Court dissolves 23-year-old marriage over wife’s request

Area Court at Centre-Igboro in Ilorin, Kwara State, has dissolved the 23-year-old marriage between a couple, Latifat Ismaila and Adebayo Ismaila following the wife’s request.

The presiding judge, Abdulkadir Ahmed, granted Latifat divorce and ordered that the petitioner should observe three months of Iddah period before re-marrying.

The court, however, said the children’s custody could not be granted to either of the two parties, stating the children in question are adults and could decide on where they want to stay.

Earlier, the petitioner told the court that her father informed her that the respondent said he was no longer interested in their union and wanted her to file for divorce.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN),  Latifat also said she was tired of their relationship and agreed they went their different ways.

Latifat prayed for the custody of their two children.

Segun acceded to divorce when the claims were read to him, saying that his wife packed out of his house three years ago.

The respondent refused that his wife had custody of their children.

“She left my house without any misunderstanding between us and got married to another man, and even had a baby for the man,” he said.
