An Area Court at Centre-Igboro in Ilorin, Kwara State, has dissolved the 23-year-old marriage between Latifat Ismaila and Adebayo Ismaila following the wife’s request.
The judge, Abdulkadir Ahmed, granted the petitioner’s prayer and ordered her to observe three months of Iddah period before remarrying.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the court, however said the children’s custody could not be granted to either of the two parties, stating that the children in question are adults and could decide where they want to stay.
Earlier, the petitioner told the court that her father informed her that the respondent said he was no longer interested in their marriage and wanted her to file for divorce.
She responded to her husband’s request positively, saying she was also tired of their relationship, but pleaded for their children’s custody.
The respondent agreed that they parted ways, but insisted on having their children’s custody, saying that the petitioner had left his house for the past three years.
“She left my house and got married to another man, and even had a baby for the man.
“Our first born, who is 23 years old was impregnated while under their mother’s care.
“I want our children’s custody because their mother failed in her responsibilities towards them,” he said.
