Court dissolves 12 years marriage over lack of respect

A Karu Grade 1 Area Court, sitting in Abuja on Thursday, dissolved a 12-year-old marriage between Fatima Abdulraheem and her husband, Olaniyi Akeem, over lack of respect.

The judge, Aliyu Alhassan, dissolved the marriage following the couple’s inability to settle its differences.

He ordered the couple to collect a divorce certificate from the registrar’s office.

Fatima said she got married to the respondent 12 years ago under Islamic law and the union was blessed with three children.

She told the court that there was no respect in the marriage and as such, she cannot remain in it.

The petitioner, therefore, urged the honourable court to dissolve the union.

The respondent’s husband, however, did not object to the petitioner’s request but rather, through a written letter, gave his consent
