Court asks INEC to make Kabba Kogi west collation centre

A Federal high court, sitting in Lokoja, has restrained the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from using Lokoja as the coalition centre for Kogi west senatorial district.

The court asked the election umpire to revert to Kabba, the headquarters of Kabba/Bunu local government area for the collation of results of the senatorial election.

The presiding judge, D.U Okorowu, while delivering his ruling, said that it would take only the National Assembly to effect the change to Lokoja.

The Kogi west chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Kola Ojo, in motion had asked the court to determine whether it was proper to make Lokoja the coalition centre for the district when Kabba is the senatorial district headquarters.

The motion was filed following the statement by the Kogi state Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), James Apam, where he said the Kogi West Senatorial district coalition centre would be Lokoja as against Kabba that is the senatorial headquarters.

Apam had argued that on assumption, he met Lokoja as the coalition centre of Kogi west with all efforts meant to convince him proving abortive.

The development made the PDP approach the court seeking an interlocutory injunction restraining INEC from using Lokoja as the collation centre.

By the ruling, the presiding judge ordered that coalition and announcement of results of the Kogi west senatorial district should now hold in Kabba.

Counsel to PDP, Gboyega Akolade, described the ruling as historic and one that would set the record straight now and in the future.
