Court adjourns Obasa’s suit challenging removal to March 10

Justice Yetunde Pinheiro of the Lagos High Court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos, has adjourned the case instituted by the reinstated Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, against the Lagos Assembly and its former Speaker, now Deputy Speaker, Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, to Monday, March 10, 2025, for continued trial.

Obasa is challenging the allegations leveled against him by 35 lawmakers, which led to his removal on January 13, 2025.

During the hearing on Friday, the judge adjourned the matter to consider all new and pending applications.

She ordered all parties to file and serve the necessary processes to enable the court to hear the pending applications on the next adjourned date.

Counsel to Obasa, Afolabi Fasanu, SAN, argued that despite his re-election as Speaker, the lawsuit remains relevant.

He maintained that Obasa is contesting the allegations in the removal notice—including fraud, high-handedness, abuse of office, and gross misconduct—on the grounds that he was denied a fair hearing.

Meanwhile, Romeo Michael, counsel for the 34 lawmakers (listed as the third to thirty-sixth defendants), asserted that even if Obasa withdraws his suit due to his reinstatement, their counterclaim remains valid.

The lawmakers are seeking a court declaration that his removal was constitutional under Section 92 of the 1999 Nigerian Constitution rather than being governed solely by the rules of the Lagos Assembly.
