Court adjourns Ekiti chieftaincy title suit

Published by

A magistrate court sitting in Ado-Ekiti has adjourned till November 29, 2023, for further hearing in a suit filed by a retired major, Olajide Ijadare over the Obaorun chieftaincy title of Ijan-Ekiti, Gbonyin Local Government Area of Ekiti.

Ijadare who has been conferred with the chieftaincy title by the traditional ruler had approached court accusing five members of the family of threat to life, harassment and conspiracy to attack.

At the resumed hearing, the prosecuting team led by Chief Taiwo Ajayi called the second witness to testify in the case who was cross-examined by counsel to the defendants, Olakanmi Falade.

The witness, Ojo Akinlabi told the court that the five defendants allegedly threatened to unleash mayhem and kill him over his support for Ijadare in becoming the Obaorun of Ijan-Ekiti.

According to him, on April 4, 2023, scheduled date for the installation of Ijadare, the defendants and their followers allegedly mobilized thugs to disrupt the process before they were dispersed by army operatives.

When asked by the defense counsel why he couldn’t list the defendants in his statement with the police, Akinlabi said, ” I told the police officer in charge but I don’t know why he omitted their names from the statement.”

The statement of the witness at the police station was admitted by the court as an exhibit after it was tendered by counsel to the defendants.

The presiding magistrate, Ojo Adeosun while adjourning the suit, called on the prosecuting team to present their final witness in a bid to close the case for judgement.
