Couples urged not to see divorce as option

Published by

Couples in troubled marriages have been advised not to make divorce an option but to fashion out ways to resolve their disputes. This was the position of speakers at a relationship summit tagged; “Broken Home, Broken Child” held to commemorate this year’s Valentine’s Day.

According to the participants at the summit, marital break down occurs when the relationship between married couples is eroded,  such that they cannot ordinarily resolve their disputes. This,  often times, lead to the dissolution of the union or separation.

They identified factors responsible for separation and divorce as domestic violence, irresponsible spouse, impotence, financial incapability, childlessness and many more.

They were however of the opinion that divorce is not the best option because the woman and her children usually bear the brunt of a broken home, adding that children from broken homes are vulnerable to sexual abuse. Also, the education and lives of children from broken homes are jeopardised. The result of this is that the children will become timid, withdrawn and lose their self esteem and confidence.

Pastor Abraham Ojekanmi maintained that having a healthy marriage begins with marrying the right partner. He  advised youths to start seeking the face of God in prayers about who to marry early enough.

The publisher  of Family Fortress Magazine, Deaconess Blessing Okareh advised parents to love and bond with their children by hugging and cuddling them, saying  this would make them confident enough to open up to their parents.  Deaconess Okareh who said divorce leaves children vulnerable, enjoined couples to be patient and tolerate each other.

In the same vein, the coordinator, Voice Out Movement, Mr Jeremiah Omisore said  the summit was aimed at fostering love and peace in the family unit.

The summit which brought together youths and young couples ,featured couple’s interview, discussions and songs rendition.
