‘Counselling psychology liberate victims of abuse’

Professor Abiodun Gesinde

Professor Abiodun Gesinde, Department of Psychology, Covenant University  has said, that an applied field of psychology and counselling psychology could be employed to liberate victims of abuse and also put a stop to unwarranted activities of virus directed towards human souls.

Speaking at the 13th inaugural lecture of the university on the topic “Psychological Virus Undermining Children and Adolescents: The Anti Viral In Counselling Psychology”, the Professor  said four groups of individuals, children, adolescents, adults and the elderly can suffer abuse from significant and nonsignificant persons in their lives.

The Professor of Counselling Psychology explained that, babies and pre-school children who are being emotionally abused or neglected,  may be overly-affectionate towards strangers or people they haven’t known for very a long time and lack confidence or  close relationship with their parents makes become aggressive or nasty towards other children and animals.

The attainment of full potentials by children, according to the professor is dependent on the assistance rendered by significant others in their life such as parents, caregivers, guardian, babysitters, and teachers among others, and as a result of their tender nature parents are expected to keep their children from danger as well as make them comfortable.

“Unfolding events in the recent past both in the developed and developing nations of the world, however indicate that  significant number of these children receive from significant others in lieu of love, care, and support is maltreatment,” he stated.

Professor Gesinde suggested that, just as people have family doctors and pastors, they should have family counsellors who will diagnose the existence of the psychological virus in their families among other professional responsibilities because virus in the soul is more dangerous than the virus in the computer.

He added that, everybody cannot have  strong belief and that all human problems cannot be spiritual, while  suggesting  that mission schools should review the way they under-utilised counselling services in their respective institutions with a view to maximising its overall benefits.
