Council says will rid system of quacks in IT profession

THE Computer Professionals Registration Council of Nigeria (CPN) on Wednesday said the council was working relentlessly to ensure sanity and purge the system of quackery to restore the Information Technology (IT) profession.

Prof. Vincent Asor, the Chairman of the council said this in a statement by Mr Aderemi Awe, the Media Officer, while speaking on its forthcoming IT General Assembly scheduled to hold from June 28 to 29 in Abuja.

He said that CPN was working with sister agencies to ensure that the IT industry in the country attained its position in contributing to the growth of the nation.

Asor said that the council was working with Bureau of Public Procurement, National Information Technology Development Agency and the Joint Admission and Matriculations Board.

Others are the National Universities Commission, Corporate Affairs Commission, Federal Inland Revenue Service and the Standard Organisation of Nigeria to stamp out quackery.

“The council has since embarked on rigorous enforcement on registration.

“Establishments who have employed non-registered IT practitioners have been advised to ask such practitioners to commence the process for registering with the council forthwith or risk facing the wrath of the law.”

Asor said that in the past two years, the council had started operation in the council’s Computer Professional Examination in Abuja, adding that the number of candidates, recognition and acceptance were growing by the day.

He said that the response of tertiary institutions to the council’s professional accreditation of their computer science and related programmes were improving due to constant engagement with the authority of the tertiary institutions.

According to him, the collaborative efforts of the council have started yielding results, while some government agencies are ready to work with the council in its regulatory role.

The chairman, however, lauded the media for their support to the council in the past and urged them to give the forthcoming assembly a wide coverage.

According to him, the events of the council are geared toward assisting the country to maximise its potentials in IT.

On the IT general assembly, with the theme: “IT for Good Governance and Economic Transformation”, he said it would be held to harness the benefits of innovative technology.

Asor said that the forum, the eleventh edition was a platform that would bring entrepreneurs, institutions, stakeholders, among other professionals in the industry together.

“The IT assembly is the flagship of all IT programmes in Nigeria; it is an exclusive networking event for IT decision makers, consultants, upcoming entrepreneurs, start-ups, practitioners and systems administrators.

“The assembly is also a platform for some of the industry’s most innovative technology distribution and service providers to showcase their products and services.

“It will avail participants the opportunity to appreciate the emerging technologies, trends and risks that are associated with transforming the various industries using IT.

“The event will commence with an induction programme and admission of new members into the IT profession,” Asor said.

The CPN established in 1993, is a corporate entity charged with the regulation, control and supervision of the computing profession in Nigeria.
