In a bid to leave a positive mark and contribute his quota to the development of the community and state where he was sent for primary assignment, a corps member serving in Gidan Zakara, Nasarawa, has launched a series of developmental projects across Nasarawa communities.
Oyedele Lawrence Olalekan, a graduate of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, commenced a series of personal developmental project across Nasarawa communities as part of his contributions in service to his fatherland.
Oyedele’s projects were predicated on four cardinal fulcrums aimed at improving life generally for residents of the community where he is serving.
The first project was to add value to students in the community by organising free after school lessons on physics, chemistry and biology at the Government Senior Secondary School, Gidan Zakara as well as practical trainings to prepare them for the recent West African Examinations Council examinations. He also organised free holiday lessons for the students of Government Junior Secondary School in Gidan Zakara.
To improve the environment, he planted 950 ornamental and economic trees across the community to sensitise people to the importance tree planting to protect the environment. And he continues to nurture the trees, some of which were planted on the premises of the Nigerian Television Authority and the Nasarawa Broadcasting Services both located in Keffi, Nasarawa State.
Also, he supplied educational materials which include chairs and desks, 100 pairs of socks, 36 exercise books, 120 pens and school uniforms for some male and female students. He also donated physics, chemistry and biology textbooks to the Government Senior Secondary School Gidan Zakara, to be freely distributed to the pupils.
To encourage students, he also gave award of excellence to five outstanding students that did well during the last examination at Government Junior Secondary School, Gidan Zakara.
Oyedele ensured that he touched the lives of virtually all age groups within Gidan Zakara community in Karshi Council Development Area of Nasarawa State with his numerous projects.
Speaking on what propelled him into undertaking the projects, Oyedele stated that he took a vow long ago to always ensure his impact is felt wherever he finds himself. “I chose the project on education because I believe it is the best legacy anyone can give or receive. Support in education is the best gift that can be given to a community. And thinking about the environment, whatever we do is dependent on how conducive our environment is, that is why I embarked on tree planting to teach people the importance of protecting the environment.
“That is the reason I also decided to in addition, donate 10 extra ornamental trees to be planted in the school compound for environmental protection and provision of shade for the students,” he stated.
Speaking on the efforts of Oyedele during the launching of one of the projects, the Nasarawa State coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps, represented by Mr Amozua Abraham, lauded Oyedele’s efforts and asked that others emulate him for the growth of the society and well being of the country as a whole.
While receiving the materials on behalf of the school, the assistant head teacher, Mrs Josephine John, expressed her appreciation that a young man can think of the development of others and use his resources to help others grow, adding that if everyone imbibes that spirit of sacrifice, the society will be a better one.
She stated that life should not be solely focused on personal needs or providing for one’s family only and each person should learn to reach out to others.
According to her, the kind act by Oyedele, a corps member, is one that should be emulated by everyone, irrespective of status or age.
