Coronavirus: Unilorin screens four foreign students, to distribute preventive kits

Coronavirus Prevention Committee of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) has said that four foreign students of the institution have been screened for COVID-19.

Speaking with journalists in Ilorin on Wednesday, the chairperson of the committee, Dr. Idayat Adurotoye, said that three of the students are from Ghana while the other one is from Chad.

She also said that the institution had examined the foreign students on symptoms of COVID-19, adding that they were all cleared.

Dr. Adurotoye, who said that the university, being a public institution, and with the outbreak of the virus confirmed by the World Health Organization (WHO) as pandemic, had set up the committee to ensure adequate measures to prevent the disease.

“We have planned on how to distribute hand sanitizer and other preventive kits to our Fufu campus where remedial programmes are taking place, College of Health Sciences, Institute of Education, as well as the main campus and other areas that are necessary.

It is recalled that authorities of the had earlier directed its returning international students to go for medical examination.

Director, Centre for International Education (CIE) of the institution, Prof. Felicia Olasheinde-Williams, who gave the directive in a letter addressed to the international students, stated that the directive was necessary to prevent the spread of Coronavirus on campus.

She urged all the returning international students to proceed to the University Clinic for medical examination, in order to prevent the spread of the virus within and outside the campus.

“Note that this medical test is an important requirement for maintaining your studentship with the University.

“As such, you are enjoined to adhere strictly to the directive immediately on your arrival.”
The university has also set up a Coronavirus Disease Prevention Committee that has been working round the clock to prevent/control the spread of COVID-19 within the University community.

In addition to sensitisation activities through various platforms, construction and equipping of wash-up areas are ongoing.

The university has also setup a 24/7 emergency and outbreak management network that includes the Unilorin Healthcare Centre, the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, the Sobi Specialist Hospital and the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), it was gathered.
