The Congress of University Academics (CONUA) has expressed worry and demanded the immediate rescue of four female students of Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University (formerly Federal University of Agriculture), Makurdi, Benue State, abducted by gunmen.
The four female students were abducted by their attackers while going to class, the development that sparked students’ protest and later led to the closure of the university.

The National President of CONUA, Dr. Niyi Sunmonu, in a statement on Thursday, described the abduction as “another tragic reminder of the worsening state of insecurity in and around tertiary schools in the country and also the growing threats to the safety of students and workers.
“It is completely unacceptable that universities that are meant to be centers of learning, innovation, and national development are increasingly becoming soft targets for criminal elements that prey on innocent students for ransom.
“That is why we as CONUA are strongly condemning the attack and demand the immediate rescue and safe return of the students.”
Sunmonu, therefore urged government at all levels, security agencies, as well as the university authority to take active and immediate actions to secure the release of the abducted students from their captors.
He also urged the government and other authorities concerned to strengthen security apparatus in and around schools nationwide to prevent recurrence and also give students and staff peace of mind while going about their activities.
He emphasised that these proactive measures would need to be taken more seriously, especially by the government, adding that “We don’t want our schools anywhere in the country to remain the soft targets for criminal elements.”
While expressing solidarity with the four kidnapped victims, their families, and the entire academic community in Benue State, Sunmonu said persistent assault on education must stop in Nigeria.
