Contributory pensioners’ union worries over interference from NUP

Published by

The Contributory Pensioners Union of Nigeria (CPUN) has accused the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) of floating a proxy union with the aim of creating confusion among pensioners.

In a statement signed by CPUN’s General Secretary, Comrade Emezuru Eugene, the union reminded NUP of the ruling by the Industrial Arbitration Panel (IAP), which instructed the latter to stop poaching contributory pensioners under the contributory pension scheme.

The CPUN accused the NUP of floating a proxy union known as the Nigerian Union of Pensioners Contributing Pensioners Scheme (NUPCPS), which has created confusion among members.

“Industrial Arbitration Panel (IAP) has given a Notice of Award regarding the poaching of contributory pensioners under the Contributory Pension Scheme by the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP).

“This award was communicated by the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment in a letter Ref: No ML.HE/1006/CON.1/2 dated 3rd July 2024.

“NUP has been acting outside its jurisdiction, thereby creating a parallel union.

“NUP has been floating a proxy union known as the Nigerian Union of Pensioners Contributing Pensioners Scheme (NUPCPS), creating a lot of confusion among our members.

“This issue was brought before the Industrial Arbitration Panel, and an award was given that spells out the jurisdictional scope of each of the unions.”

According to the statement, the IAP issued the following awards:

“An order directing the Nigerian Union of Pensioners to stop unionizing workers under the contributory pensioners’ scheme, as doing so and continuing to do so amounts to poaching.

“We declare that the jurisdictional scopes of the parties to this dispute are not the same in its entirety, as the Defined Benefit Scheme and Contributory Pension Scheme are different.

“We order that the Nigeria Union of Pensioners maintain their scheme template vis-à-vis their jurisdictional scope by unionizing only workers who fall under the scheme that they have been operating from inception, as a branch of a union is not empowered in law to carry out the functions of a registered union.

“We order that the Nigeria Union of Pensioners stop further operational activities under the name of Nigeria Union of Pensioners.”
