Commuters stranded as Iseyin-Okeho bridge caves in

Published by

Commuters were stranded for hours as the bridge in the Olugbade area on the Iseyin-Okeho road caved in on Friday.

Friday’s caving in of a major part of the bridge occurred when a truck loaded with bags of maize en route to Iseyin from Okeho was being driven across the bridge.

When the Nigerian Tribune was at the location, it observed that the trunk of the truck was detaching from its hood while it spilt the bags of maize into the stream under the bridge.

For hours, the occupants of the truck were seen lifting bags from underneath the bridge, offloading some bags of maize into another truck while packing some scattered maize from the road and putting them in another sack.

While the truck owners tried to minimise their losses from the incident, some other youths used diggers and arranged some broken tar and logs of wood to create a passable road beside the broken truck.

The narrow path created provided a passable route for vehicles while people had to alight and push those vehicles heavily loaded with items like yams, firewood, bags of rice, and bags of maize, among others.

Sticks tied with red flags were seen as part of the broken tar that collapsed into the stream under the bridge.

In conversations at the scene of the bridge collapse, people decried that the incident was bound to happen.

They noted that the bridge had continuously caved in, while their cry for attention to the bridge before a total collapse had fallen on deaf ears.

Though a narrow palliative route was created on the bridge, the residents of the area noted that the bridge would soon totally become impassable as a result of vehicular pressure.

On the importance of fixing the road, the residents said the only other road that could link Iseyin to Okeho at Ado-Awaye was miles away and amounted to a merry-go-round.
