Community Development Service: backbone of NYSC existence for 48yrs ― Gombe Coordinator

It has been revealed that Community Development Service (CDS) normally embarked upon by corps members during the service year, has remained as one of the major contributing factors and the driving force for enduring the relevance of the NYSC programme in its 48th year of existence.

The assertion was made by the Gombe State Coordinator of NYSC, Mrs Ada Imoni while commissioning Community Development Service Projects executed by corps members, Precious Omimi GM/20B/0705 and Eko Uko Onaji GM/20B/ 1029 held at the NYSC Zonal office, Gombe, on Thursday.

Ada Imoni commended the corps members for taking the bold steps to initiate and execute viable projects in their host communities which have gone to show that they interacted well with the communities as required by the tenets of the service.

The coordinator said that she was particularly moved by the donation of a tricycle to a physically challenged student of Government Day Secondary School Shongo-Idrissa, Zainab Mohammed, donation of an automatic hand washing machine for use at the NYSC Temporary Orientation Camp in Amada, donation of a 1KVA Solar System for the NYSC Zonal office and educational materials for GDSS Shongo Idrissa and Shongo Idrissa Primary School.

While encouraging other serving corps members to tow their paths of selfless community services,  Imoni, said a good name is always better than silver and gold.

She maintained that corps members must strive to mingle with members of their host communities and ensure that they touched their lives positively so that long after they might have left, the communities will continue to remember and cherish their memories.

Meanwhile, an elated Principal of GDSS Shongo-Idrissa, Alh Mahmud Mohammed expressed his gratitude to the corps members for standing out and making a positive impact in the community with their short stay among the people.

He prayed for the sustenance of the NYSC scheme and commended the Director-General, Brigadier-General Shuaibu Ibrahim for keeping the scheme visible.

Mahmud Mohammed maintained that the community, in honour of corps member, Precious Omimi, has given her the traditional title of ‘Tauraruwan Shongo Idrissa’ which means in English, the ‘Star of Shongo Idrissa’.

The programme was well attended by staff, corps members and other well-meaning friends of the scheme who poured encomiums on the feat achieved by the corps members stressing that the positivity of the scheme far outways the negativity calling for its continuation as a means of fostering unity and peaceful co-existence.

The two corps members while sharing their experiences said that they enjoyed their stay among the people though at the beginning it was shaky commending the way they were held by the people.
