Community commends NGO’s initiative on women’s health

Published by

A non-government organisation (NGO) has been commended by Sogunro community in Ogba,  Lagos State, for sensitising young girls on menstruation and menstrual cycle development.

The community’s treasurer and secretary, Elder B.A. Ayo, who welcomed the organisation’s efforts at educating their young girls, noted that the project came at a most crucial period.

“The children have been on holiday and are well rested from the pressure of academic activities, so this is a good time for them to embrace whatever is being taught, so such engagement is welcome and very much encouraged,” he said.

The NGO under the auspices of Project Save A Life Today (SALT) embarked on its first campaign geared towards increasing the mental and physical well-being of young girls that have reached puberty.

The event, which brought together medical personnel, health facilitators and community volunteers, has as its theme: “How to Handle Menstruation and Menstrual Cycle Development.”

Young ladies of Sogunro community trooped out to listen to the health talk by Dr. (Mrs). Oluwaseun Afoke, a medical doctor at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) and also received free gynaecological tests conducted by medical experts.

Speaking on the impact of the event, a young married lady, Jessica Aideyan, applauded the foundation for the initiative.

“I had lots of fun, and gained a lot too, I did not know how to calculate my menstrual cycle before now. I relied on my mobile phone app to do that, but thanks to this lecture by Dr. Afoke, I now know how to calculate my menstrual cycle and watch out for tell-tale signs of abnormality within my body.” she said.

The young ladies in attendance had a chance to express themselves, as they asked questions on challenges peculiar to their bodies, and were also engaged in several mental exercises, showing they understood all they were taught.

The event also featured one on one counselling sessions with the doctor, medical screenins, games and presentation of gifts to those in attendance.

According to the organisers, Project Salt is passionate about saving every young lady that needs help.

A meaningful impact in the lives of ladies is what we are aiming for. This is the very beginning, we are working and planning for a much bigger outreach. We already have a repository of programme outlined for the new year and we are hopeful that in 2017, this event will take a bigger shape,” the programme coordinator said.

Project Salt is an organisation aimed towards enhancing the value to Africa’s ladies and the girl child.
