Commissioner seeks legislation to shut sub-standard schools in Anambra

Published by

PROF Kate Omenugha, the Anambra Commissioner for Education, has called for a legislative framework to enable the ministry to shut illegal and substandard private schools in the state.

Omenugha made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Awka on Monday.

She said that the state government was determined to strengthen the school system and would stop at nothing to ensure that private schools operate within set standards.

“We are presently on tour of schools in the state and we have observed a number of anomalies.

“We need the enabling laws to enable us to take actions, including shutting down private schools which fall short of the set standards.”

The commissioner said the requirement for practising teachers to get Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) certification was in order, adding that private schools would be compelled to comply.

Omenugha further said that the state government was already holding discussions with the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in the state, to ensure the induction of teaching staff.
