In comedy, talent is never enough —Shete

Published by

Shete is a household name in the comedy industry in Ibadan and the South-West. The entertainer told ROTIMI IGE about turning talent to profitable opportunities, among other issues.

How have you been able to remain on top of your game for so long?

Firstly, God Almighty made it possible, then perseverance and of course, my lovely fans and friends who believe in me.

You are also a compere of events and critics opine that there is a difference between both crafts. Kindly explain?

Well, I combine both stand up comedy and compering events. Not all MCs are good comedians and not all comedians can make a good MC. But I believe I am able to do both.

Which pays more? Comedy or professional MC…

Well, these days, clients prefer to have a double act for their events, someone who can crack jokes and of course make a good MC. So, they don’t have to pay two people since a single body can multi task as a comedian and MC. So, I’ll say both of them pay well.

Tell us a bit about your journey into comedy.

Like I always say, comedy has always been a part of me while I was much younger. It’s been a long time coming and we bless God.

You have an annual comedy event in Ibadan? Tell us about it.

Yes of course. I have an annual event called #Rendezvouswithshete which comes up every November. It’s a family show, a night of comedy music and dance. This year is the third edition.

People say comedians outside Lagos are most talented but lack opportunity. How are you changing this narrative?

Well, I’ll say a lion is a lion whether in Lagos or Kano. I believe no matter where you are, it’s about making a difference. Your talent and good character will speak for you.

What changes do you crave for your industry?

The comedy industry is doing fine and I believe we can do more.

If not comedy, what would you have been?

If not comedy, I would have been a dancer

Your thoughts about brands not endorsing many talented entertainers outside Lagos?

We pray for a positive change. People outside Lagos also have what it takes to be endorsed. From our reach to content to talent. We hope to see changes in earnest.
