Codest Boi: A rising Afropop star with distinctive sound

David Toritseju Tonayan popularly known as Codest Boi, is an emerging Nigerian musician who hails from in Lagos, Nigeria, during a musical era where Afro pop reigned. He began his music career in 2012, and later moved to Ghana in 2014.

With a deep love for African music traditions, Codest Boi has carved out a distinct musical style that combines playful elements with introspective lyrics. His classical music influences, combined with magical sounds, create a captivating listening experience for his growing fan base.

In March of 2018, he released his first official single titled “Jaye” and “Gradually” just a few months after he put out his hit single known as “Laye mi”, featuring Teni entertainer which earned him significant recognition in the music industry.

Codest Boi is a self-taught producer and writer who’s transparency makes it clear that he draws his artistic inspiration from genuine moments of extreme emotion such as heart break and pleasure.

He currently has no strong public affiliation with many other artist and maintains a mystical impression to his person which allows people to focus on the music. Codest Boi cites wizkid as a major musical influence. He is also inspired by the likes of Drake, Shakka, Justin Bieber and Bryson Tiller; as well as Nigerian artists like Wizkid, Wande Coal, and Fela.

“My early passion for music was influenced by Fela’s music, which I heard during my upbringing. Artists like 2face, Psquare, Wande Coal, Wizkid, Runtown, and Olamide further shaped my musical journey. Internationally, Rihanna, Beyoncé, Chris Brown, and Drake have played pivotal roles in inspiring my career,” he discloses.

Codest Boi believes that African music is a global sound and wants to use his ability to both write and produce as a way to help shape the culture and show it’s versatility.
