AS part of efforts to further broaden access to coding education for Lagos residents, the Lagos State government said on Sunday that it has expanded the CodeLagos initiative to Out-of-School centres with classes expected to commence on Monday 13 November 2017.

Currently, the programme has been expanded and is running in about 150 schools in the state and it is expected that the programme, which is totally free for participants, would by January 2018 have expanded to a minimum of 500 schools across the State, while the Out-of-School program would expand to all the public libraries and selected community centres in the state.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Mr Obafela Bank-Olemoh, announced this in a statement on made available to newsmen at Alausa, saying the initiative was expected to position the state as the technology frontier in Africa by training one million Lagos residents to Code.

According to him, classes will commence in four centres namely: Herbert Macaulay Library, Yaba; Ilupeju Public Library, Ilupeju; Isolo Public Library, Isolo and Onikan Youth Centre, Lagos Island, saying four (4) classes will hold daily from 8:30 am to 4 pm in these centres.

Bank-Olemoh said the state governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode, gave the Ministry of Education a clear mandate to prepare Lagosians for the economy of the future which is going to be technology driven, adding that CodeLagos was initiated as a response to achieving same.

The special adviser said the CodeLagos Out-of-School program would provide access to coding Education for interested Lagosians aged 16 years and above, who were currently not in any primary or secondary school in Lagos State.

Explaining the Out-of-School program further, Bank-Olemoh said that the classes would run for six weeks from Monday to Friday, with each class doing one hour 30 minutes.

According to him, the classes will cover Web Development and Fundamentals of Java and Python.

It would be recalled that the CodeLagos project initially kicked off with its pilot phase in July this year, rolling out in primary and secondary schools in Lagos State, including government and private schools.
