Coalition suspends planned protest against NLC

The Coalition of All Farmers in Nigeria has suspended its planned counterprotest against the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), as it asked the Labour Congress to negotiate with the government.

In a statement issued in Abuja, the leader of the coalition, Dr Bamai Abubakar, said they consider a time like this an opportunity for a strategic approach to finding ways of solving the economic challenges, irrespective of their political affiliation, position, and class.

The Coalition is made up of farmers, commodity associations, cooperatives, processors, and agro-producer associations within the agricultural business value chain in Nigeria.

The Coalition also knocked the NLC for not holding protests in spite of the challenges (kidnapping and bandit attacks) that farmers, who constitute about 80% of the Nigerian population, face.

They call on the NLC to consider a robust and all-inclusive dialogue and negotiation with the government rather than the proposed protest in a time like this when Nigerians are facing economic hardship.

“We know it is our legitimate right to protest, but with the rising tension and insecurity in the country, we believe that protest is not an option.

“It has not been easy for Nigerian farmers to survive amidst continuous attacks on their farms and lives; therefore, we’re calling on the Nigerian government, the NLC, and all stakeholders in the agricultural business sector of the economy to sort out a lasting solution to the deepening economic crisis and insecurity in the nation,” the statement noted.
