Coalition calls for increased representation of women in Bauchi LG elections

Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Mohammed Abdulkadir, as leader of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, has been urged to prioritise the inclusion of women in leadership positions with the state’s LGC structure and political offices.

The call was also made to the other political parties with offices in the state to prioritise the inclusion of women in their leadership positions, structures, and political party affairs at all levels in the state.

The call became necessary as the forthcoming local government elections in Bauchi State draw near, as contained in a press release by the Leadtots Development Initiative, Young Leaders Network, and Thamani for Women and Youth Development Initiative.

The Coalition called upon the Governor, the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, the All Progressive Congress (APC), and all other political parties to prioritise gender inclusivity by ensuring the participation of women as candidates or at least deputies in all 20 local government areas of the state.

According to the Coalition, “the call stems from the urgent need to meet the 35% affirmative action threshold set by the Nigerian Constitution, which aims to promote gender equality and ensure women’s meaningful participation in decision-making processes at all levels of governance.”

While commending Governor, Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammad, for the commendable steps taken in appointing women to key ministries within the state, it urged for further strides towards gender parity.”

Thamani for the Women and Youth Development Initiative stressed thatit is imperative that such efforts are extended to the grassroots level, where local governance directly impacts the lives of citizens.”

He added that “women constitute a significant proportion of the electorate and possess invaluable skills and perspectives that can enrich policy-making and governance at the local government level.”

“By actively encouraging their participation in the electoral process, Bauchi State stands to benefit from diverse leadership that reflects the broader demographics and aspirations of its population,” he added.

The Coalition stressed that “we, therefore, call upon all stakeholders, including political parties, civil society organisations, and the electorate, to support and advocate for the inclusion of women in leadership positions within Bauchi State’s local government structures.”

It stressed that “together, we can foster a more inclusive and equitable society where every citizen’s voice is heard and represented.”
