Climate change threatening food production, supply in Nigeria, expert raises alarm

AN agricultural expert, Professor James Alabi Adediran has said that climate change otherwise known as global warming is threatening food production and supply in the country.

Adediran, who is a professor of soil science made this disclosure during a workshop organised by Nigeria Institute of Soil Science (NISS) South West zone for extension agents and farmers in the region on Thursday.

Adediran who is the immediate past Executive Director of Institute of Agricultural Research and Training (IAR&T) while speaking at the event held at the premises of IAR&T in Ibadan, maintained the effects of climate change is posing serious challenge to agricultural systems including crops, livestock, forestry and fisheries.

Dignitaries who present at the workshop include IAR&T Executive Director, Professor Veronica Obatolu who was represented by Deputy Director of the institute, Dr. Olaide Saka, extension agents, soil scientists and farmers from Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Ondo, Lagos and Ekiti states.

Adediran who is the Southwest zonal coordinator of NISS, added that the effects of climate change vary from region, country and location.

Adediran while addressing the participants advised farmers to adopt new methods of agriculture such as irrigation in order to reduce the effects of climate change in the country.
