Climate change, sustainable development top Commonwealth agenda ― FG

As Nigeria joins the rest of 53 member nations of the Commonwealth to celebrate 2020 Commonwealth Day, on Monday, the Federal Government has said tackling climate change and its impacts, as well as sustainable development, remain the focus of the “family”.

Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, briefed newsmen, on Tuesday in Abuja, on the activities lined up for this year’s Commonwealth Day celebration on Monday 9th March 2020, with the theme: “Delivering a common: Connecting, innovating, transforming”.

The day would be celebrated with a colourful parade of the Commonwealth flags and presentation of the theme song by school children as well as poetry recitation, drama presentation, cultural dance and exhibition.

The Minister said the theme was chosen because the governments and people of the diverse family of 54 Commonwealth countries connect at many levels through extensive and deep-rooted networks of friendship and goodwill.

Adamu said the countries were united in finding solutions to the impact of climate change and sustainable ways of using the natural resources of the land and ocean, build peace and harmony through social and democratic development.

Adamu, who was represented by the Minister of State for Education, Hon Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, added that inclusive economic empowerment was also encouraged including fair trade and delivering a common future.

Members of Commonwealth with a population of about 2.4 billion is said to account for nearly 30 per cent of the world’s population found mostly in Africa, Asia, North America, the Caribbean, Europe and the South Pacific.

Adamu said the purpose of the voluntary Commonwealth was for international cooperation and to advance economies, social development and human rights in member countries.
