…urges Nigerians to embrace true change
Ven. Dr. Endurance Avwerosuo has called on Christians to embrace genuine repentance during the Lenten season, emphasizing the need for inner transformation rather than outward displays of piety.
Speaking on the significance of Lent, he noted that the 40-day period, which begins on Ash Wednesday, is a time for reflection, sacrifice, and spiritual renewal. Many believers traditionally give up certain luxuries or habits as an act of penance, but Avwerosuo stressed that true repentance goes beyond ritualistic observances.
Quoting Joel 2:13—”Rend your heart and not your garment”—he highlighted the need for sincere remorse and a commitment to change. “Historically, tearing one’s garment was a visible sign of grief or penitence, but the prophet Joel reminds us that true repentance must begin in the heart,” he said.
Applying the message to Nigeria’s socio-political landscape, Avwerosuo urged leaders to reflect on their actions and serve with integrity. He called for national healing, civic responsibility, and a commitment to justice and equity. “Citizens must go beyond protests and social media activism. Active participation in governance and genuine advocacy for change are crucial for national transformation,” he stated.
The cleric also addressed corruption and injustice, stressing the need for both individuals and institutions to embrace ethical leadership. He encouraged Nigerians to seek divine guidance through prayer and spiritual reflection, fostering unity and hope in challenging times.
“Lent is not just about external sacrifices but about deep, personal renewal,” he concluded. “By rending our hearts, we draw closer to God and contribute to a society built on truth, justice, and compassion.”
