Clearance rush hits seaports as shipping companies close for elections

Published by

Importers at the nation’s seaports of Apapa and Tin-Can ports are currently rushing to clear their cargoes following early closure notice served by major shipping companies over the Presidential elections holding on Saturday in Nigeria.

According to an importer, Mr Ige Paul who spoke to Tribune Online exclusively, importers have besieged the ports to ensure cargoes leave by latest, late on Friday due to the Presidential elections holding on Saturday.

According to Ige, “The shipping companies have issued statements confirming their early closure of work due to elections on Saturday.

“Many of them have cited the Presidential elections holding on Saturday as the reason for their actions. So many of us are in the ports to secure clearance of our cargoes because there won’t be any weekend clearance at the ports this week.

“Also, the Federal Government has announced the closure of seaports and borders ahead of the elections. So it is imperative that my cargoes leave the ports today because they have been here since last month.”

A copy of the notice served by one of the shipping companies, CMA-CGM which was sighted by the Nigerian Tribune reads thus: “This is to inform you that our offices will be closed for business by 2:00 PM on Friday, the 15th of February due to Saturday’s Presidential and National Assembly elections. We regret any inconveniences.”
