CIBN committed towards developing Nigeria’s economy ― CIBN president

Published by

The President/Chairman of Council, the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN), Dr Bayo Olugbemi, has expressed the commitment of the institute towards building quality students that would excel in the banks’ industry who will contribute to the nation’s growth economic growth.

Olugbemi who stated this during the inauguration of a lecture theatre donated by him to Mass Communication Department of Joseph Ayo Babalola University, Ikeji Arakeji, said CIBN has commenced linkage programmes in some universities and polytechnics across the country in order to key in into the modern banking system in relations to the recent global economic reality.

He noted that this will help to provide invaluable contextualised knowledge, insights and locally relevant recommendations for policy formulation and implementation; solving existential problems and producing new knowledge that can be adapted for economic improvement.

He, however, said the institution had changed its syllabus to enable banking students to key into the modern banking system, saying CIBN had been doing its best to train bankers among the students of higher institutions, hence the linkage programmes.

He said the banking industry is trying its best, especially in terms of contributing to the growth of the economy.

He disclosed that the institution had changed its syllabus to infuse some other modern banking programmes that will affect the nation’s economy by infusing professional studies to academics.

He said: “We were trained in the years back when there was no digitalization and some other banking technology. A lot of things have happened that didn’t happen when we were trained as bankers, but today we have to infuse all these in the curriculum of our students and also we have linkages in about 16 universities and polytechnics in Nigeria

“We try to infuse professional studies into academics as you are finishing your banking and finance programme or any allied programme, if you are a member of CIBN, you will get an exemption, you just need to do a few subjects to qualify. We also have linkages with some other schools. We call it MSC/ ACIB or MBA/ACIB so that as you are finishing your Msc you are also finishing your ACIB.

“Because you would have done all the subjects, we are doing a lot to ensure that one capacity building is entrenched in the students while they are in school and also to trained them in areas where they would be useful when they come out of school.”

Olugbemi explained that he donated the building to the school, as part of his efforts to contribute to the development of the education sector in Nigeria and also because God asked him to do it.

In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Kolawole Sonaike, commended CIBN President for the gesture and expressed assurance that the university would make judicious use of the facility.

Sonaike also implored well-meaning Nigerians to emulate the Olugbemi’s gestures and assist in the infrastructural development of the institution.
